Maryland Youth Sports Coach Arrested For Child Porn Crimes

Parents expect that sports coaches will treat their children with respect. They trust these individuals and would be shocked to know that they are engaging in criminal activity. Possession of child pornography materials is an especially shocking crime.

A youth sports coach in Maryland has been charged with child porn crimes. The 43-year-old man from Eden was arrested on November 4 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received tips that the man was downloading child porn. The man is now facing multiple criminal charges.

The investigation began in May after investigators with the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division Eastern Region received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Investigators were informed that the man was downloading child porn from a social media platform and was in possession of multiple images.

Detectives investigated the case and were able to link the account to the man. They recovered several hundred child porn images. In early November, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the man, who was arrested by Maryland State Police.

According to police, the man serves as a volunteer coach for youth sports. However, there is no evidence that the children involved in those sports were victims of the man’s child porn crimes.

After his initial court appearance, the man was released after posting bond. No subsequent court date has been announced.

Police are still investigating the man’s activities. If their child has been a victim, parents are asked to contact police at the Princess Anne Barrack.

How Police Track Child Porn Downloads

You may wonder how police are able to quickly link child porn to a user. Investigators are able to do so using peer-to-peer file-sharing network sites such as LimeWire. Local and federal agents have special software that allows them to track users and images through the use of unique identifiers. Detectives are able to conduct these searches without any legal limitations.

A police officer will log on to a peer-to-peer site and use keywords to search for child pornography. The officer will download any matching images and use special software, such as Fairplay, to determine the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the person who sent the file. The IP address includes information such as the name and physical address of the person who shared the child porn images. Fairplay also  tracks the illegal images using the unique digital fingerprints associated with each image. This helps police sort through thousands of child porn images by flagging previously identified photos.
