Student, 18, accused of assaulting crossing guard

A Maryland crossing guard employed at an Anne Arundel County School reported on May 28 that an 18-year-old female student assaulted her in the school’s parking lot. According to the report, the crossing guard was attempting to obtain the student’s vehicle’s license plate after she violated the Maryland motor vehicle law the previous day.

On May 27, a female crossing guard was directing traffic in order to allow pedestrians to cross the street after school let out. The police report says that crossing guard had stopped traffic when the student driver of a Chevrolet failed to follow the crossing guard’s directions and drove through a marked crosswalk that contained pedestrians. The next day, as the crossing guard was attempting to take a picture of the license plate from the vehicle, the accused driver exited the car and approached her. The female student allegedly cursed at the guard and forcibly grabbed her wrist in order to take the camera away. While the crossing guard says that she was unable to take the phone, the student allegedly slapped her in the face.

The crossing guard allegedly told the student that she was going to call the police. The student then allegedly entered her vehicle and left the parking lot. The police reportedly issued a warrant for the student on May 30. She was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, attempted robbery and attempted theft under $1000.

If the student is convicted for theft, she could face a maximum prison sentence of 18 months in jail. An attorney may be able to put together a strong defense that could potentially result in reduced consequences. For example, if the evidence against the student is strong, the attorney may still negotiate a plea deal with the prosecution that has the student plead guilty to charges that carry lesser penalties.
