Maryland theft: Police say 2 bought puppy with stolen credit card

A puppy and some clothes were among the purchases reportedly made by two individuals that are suspected of taking a purse from the car of a woman while she attended church services. The Maryland theft is said to have occurred after the individuals broke into the woman’s motor vehicle. Credit cards were apparently among the items in the purse at the time of the incident.

Law enforcement authorities suggest that the two individuals suspected of the theft acted quickly following the incident. The pair are said to have used the apparent victim’s photo and personal information to obtain a phony Maryland driver’s license. Thereafter, the two — at least one of whom was identified as a woman — purchased a Yorkshire Terrier puppy from a local pet store using a credit card stolen from the victim. The dog was said to be just 3 months old.

Along with the puppy, the two are said to have then entered the Nordstrom’s store in Bethesda. At least some of their moves were allegedly captured on mall surveillance video. Clothing was reportedly purchased, and authorities say that over $4,000 was charged on the woman’s credit card.

The two suspects had not been apprehended — or even identified — by police as of the publication of a news report concerning the incident. The media report did not indicate if there were any witnesses to the alleged theft from the car. Likewise, there was no indication of any surveillance video concerning any attempt to enter the woman’s car. Assuming that authorities are able to apprehend the two they believe responsible, it is likely that a number of criminal charges will follow. Nevertheless, the burden of proving those accusations will be the sole responsibility of prosecutors, a burden that must meet an exacting measure of proof before any criminal conviction can be secured.
