Child porn offenders can be a variety of demographics. While most older men, they can be young, trustworthy people such as teachers and coaches.
People are not always as they seem. A Maryland volleyball coach was caught masquerading online as a teen boy in an attempt to receive sexually explicit images and videos of underage girls.
The 32-year-old man was arrested in early May after police executed a search warrant on his home in Taneytown. The man was charged with multiple child porn crimes after it was determined that he used several usernames on Snapchat to send and receive sexually explicit pictures and videos of young girls.
Police began investigating the coach after it received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that the man had shared child porn on Snapchat from April through October 2021. According to investigators, the man had contacted more than 1,000 users on Snapchat while posing as a teen boy. It is believed that he may be associated with other schools and athletic businesses throughout the Baltimore area. The man used multiple usernames on Snapchat, including pictures1025, laxguy2323, volleygirlhan, and volleygirl1025.
The man was a substitute teacher and varsity volleyball coach at Westminster High School. It is unknown if any students at the school were victims. Investigators are working with school officials as well as the Carroll County Board of Education to determine if any student victims had inappropriate contact with the man.
The man was terminated from his positions with the school shortly after his arrest. The school district is fully cooperating with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. The man is currently in a Carroll County jail, where he is being held without bail. A bond hearing was set for May 11.
Unfortunately, many respected adults such as coaches engage in child porn crimes. It is unknown exactly why, but perhaps they think they won’t get caught, seeing as they work with children. They’re often seen as the last person anyone would suspect.
Sometimes adults coach volleyball, football, basketball, and other sports at the elementary school and high school levels as a way to get closer to children. This is especially true if they have a history of being attracted to children. And when children do become victims, they often don’t report it because they are scared of what might happen. This allows the sex abuse and child porn crimes to continue.
Child pornography is a very serious crime in Maryland. If you have been accused, you need to act quickly to protect your legal rights.
