What are non-physical effects of domestic violences?

Victims of domestic violence face a long road to recovery. In many cases, there are significant effects of the domestic violence that some people might not realize even exist. Not only are physical injuries usually present, but emotional and mental trauma are also likely. All of these effects are some of the reasons why anyone who is a victim of domestic violence needs to leave their abuser as soon as they can safely do so.

What are some of the mental effects of domestic violence?

A person who has lived through domestic violence will often suffer mental health conditions like depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Some people might also suffer from dissociation. All of these conditions can lead to significant mental health care needs, which can be costly and time consuming. The process is often mentally draining and emotionally painful because you might have to re-live some of the events in order to fully move past them.

What other health effects might occur?

The exact types of effects that you might suffer from because of domestic abuse can vary depending on the type of abuse, the severity of the abuse, and the longevity of the abuse. Some of these can include sexual dysfunction, muscle tension, chronic fatigue, involuntary shaking, changes in sleeping patterns, changes in eating habits, and changes with menstruation or fertility.

When you are being abused at home, your top concern is likely survival. If you are planning on leaving the person who is abusing you, learning about protective orders can help you to formulate your plan. A protective order can help you remain safe through a court order that is enforceable by the Maryland police department.
