Same-sex couples have several adoption options available

Same-sex parents who adopt children face some unique challenges. That doesn’t mean that LGBT couples shouldn’t consider adoption. In fact, the number of LGBT couples adopting children is expected to grow thanks to changes in laws.

In one of our recent blog posts, we discussed some of the challenges that adopted children of same-sex couples might face. If you recall, we also discussed how these challenges don’t usually have a negative effect on the child’s self-esteem. Adopted children just want love and acceptance as part of the family who chose them.

We know that adopting a child is a big step for any couple since you are committing to raising a child. We understand that sexual orientation isn’t a marker for how good of a parent a person will be. We can even help you with out-of-state adoptions and agency adoptions.

In the case of same-sex couples, adoption of a partner’s biological child might be the desired option. If both partners raise a child who is the biological child of only one partner, the non-biological parent wouldn’t have a right to visitation or custody of the child unless the child was adopted by the non-custodial parent.
