Did area police recently go overboard in their pursuit to capture a young man whom they believed they saw sell drugs? According to The Baltimore Sun, area police were on an undercover mission to bust a drug deal last Sunday when they were led on a chase to apprehend a 17 year old, and the chase turned into a crash.
Sources report that the young suspect turned crash victim was okay after the crash, but his health has deteriorated since then. The specifics about his injuries are not available; his identity is also being withheld since he is a juvenile.
This Maryland drug crime case now has an extra layer to it, because the officers responsible for the pursuit that landed the youth in jail are now under internal investigation. Initial reports indicate that the department believes the officers acted within expected professional standards, but further investigation could still reveal otherwise.
The officers were pursuing the juvenile because they had allegedly seen the young man approach a vehicle and pass off a bag of drugs, reportedly capsules filled with heroine. When he rode his bicycle away from the scene of the alleged handoff, police went after him. As an officer tried to barricade a potential exit route for the young man, he backed into and injured the bicyclist.
Whether the juvenile suspect has faced legal trouble before has not been shared with the public. The facts that he is a minor reportedly in critical condition make revealing details about the case a sensitive matter. We will, however, post an update about this case when more developments about the suspect’s health, the investigation into the crash and the drug case become available.
