Court date set for Maryland man charged in DUI accident

A 51-year-old Hagerstown man who is allegedly responsible for an automobile crash back in 2014 that paralyzed a Sharpsburg man now has a trial date set for Aug. 31. The charges against the man include: causing life threatening injuries while driving under the influence and violating an alcohol restriction already on his license for a prior driving under the influence conviction. He is also charged with several other types of traffic and drunk driving offenses.

The charges against the man stemmed from an incident that occurred around 3 p.m. on August 10, 2014, at the intersection of Sterling Road and Downsville Pike. According to court documents, the Sharpsburg man was riding as a passenger with a female driver in a Hyundai that was traveling to the south of Downsville Pike. As the vehicle crossed through the intersection, it was then struck on the passenger’s side by the Hagerstown man’s Pontiac Grand Prix when he allegedly pulled out into the intersection at the same time as the passing vehicle.

Police state that when the man was questioned at the scene and asked if he had been drinking, he reportedly said that he had consumed five or six beers prior to getting behind the wheel. A subsequent breath test revealed a blood alcohol content level of 0.12 percent. A blood alcohol level of 0.8 percent is considered as intoxicated in the state of Maryland.
