2 Arrested in Maryland Theft Case

Shoplifting, also known as retail theft, is a common crime. Many people find it acceptable to take small items from a store without paying. Many times, they start off small and then move on to stealing bigger, more valuable items.

Two women from Maryland were recently arrested after stealing clothes from multiple stores. The first theft occurred on November 9. Police officers were alerted to a theft at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located on W. Macphail Road in Bel Air. Police were given a description of two women who had stolen several clothing items from the store and then fled the scene in a silver Ford Fusion. A police officer searched the area and was able to locate the vehicle at the Harford Mall parking lot. One woman was located walking in the area and was apprehended by police.

Police later found out that the two women had committed a second theft — this time from Victoria’s Secret, located inside the Harford Mall. Police maintained surveillance on the Ford Fusion and were able to apprehend the second woman at the location. Law enforcement officials executed a search and seizure warrant on the Ford Fusion. As a result, police recovered more than $2,000 worth of stolen apparel and other merchandise. Both women were charged with theft and theft scheme crimes. One of the women had a warrant for her arrest after she was convicted of theft in Virginia.

The two women arrested for theft were a 24-year-old from Baltimore and a 25-year-old from Odenton. The 24-year-old was released on bond, while the other was held without bond.

Retail Theft

While theft is one of the most common crimes in Maryland, most people who engage in shoplifting are not criminals. Many people who shoplift have a problem with impulse control, either due to a mental disorder or medications they are taking. This can cause them to engage in behavior they would otherwise not do.

Many people who are caught shoplifting often have no criminal record. This is the first time they have ever been arrested. There is a lot at stake if they are convicted, so to avoid harsh penalties, they should seek a competent criminal defense attorney who can aggressively defend them.

The penalties for retail theft depend on the value of the items stolen. When the theft is under $1,000, it is a misdemeanor, with penalties ranging from 90 days to 18 months in jail. Fines can be as high as $1,000. When the theft is greater than $1,000, it becomes a felony. A person can face up to 15 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Theft is a common criminal charge, but that does not make it right. Depending on the value of the stolen goods, a person can face felony charges and significant jail time for a theft conviction.
