Work out child custody matters now to make the future easier

Child support and custody are separate matters. This means that a parent can’t withhold child support if they can’t see the child and visitations can’t be withheld if support payments aren’t made. Parents who think about this carefully might be able to save themselves a lot of trouble in the future.

It is important for a child to have a meaningful relationship with both parents as long as there isn’t any abuse or similar situation going on. Just because you and your ex can’t get along doesn’t mean that your children should be the ones to suffer.

If you and your ex can be cordial to each other for the sake of your children, you are likely going to reduce the stress that your children have to deal with. Another benefit to being able to work together is that your children will learn the importance of mutual respect.

As you and your ex navigate through these new waters of child custody, make sure that you aren’t putting your child in the middle of adult matters. Your child doesn’t need to know when support payments don’t come in on time. He or she shouldn’t have to relay messages threatening to pull visitation from the other parent.

We understand that you are in a difficult position because of the divorce. Trying to work through the support and custody matters at hand might help you to develop a child custody agreement that you can turn to when you need to determine how various situations must be handled. The more detailed the child custody order, the better you will likely be prepared for issues in the future.
