Why Do People Get Divorced?

The statistics show that nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. It’s hard to stay happily married. People change; life changes. Two people madly in love may grow to hate each other as time goes by.

People fall out of love and divorce for many reasons. Even couples who have been together for 30, 40, 50 years or longer suddenly get divorced. Nobody is immune. Nobody gets married with the intention of getting divorced, but it happens.

But why exactly do couples decide to end their marriage. The reasons change all the time. Here are the top reasons why couples go from “I do” from “I don’t.”

Top Reasons for Divorce

A study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy surveyed 2,371 people who had just gone through a divorce. Nearly half—47%—cited lack of intimacy as their top reason for divorce. This was because one or both parties fell out of love.

Communication problems was second on the list, at 44%. This means that one spouse communicated less than the other or the spouses had different communication styles.

At 34% was a lack of respect, trust or sympathy. People expect these qualities from their partner, and it can be frustrating when they have to go to friends or family members with problems because their spouses do not support them.

Growing apart was fourth on the list, with 32% of people citing this as the reason for their divorce. Growing apart happens for various reasons. Sometimes spouses develop different values. People change over time and they may decide they want to do something different with their lives.

What Does This Mean?

These reasons are different than those stated in the past. Years ago, the other spouse was often blamed for the divorce. For example, adultery, addiction and abuse were once common issues. While these issues still crop up in some divorces, they  have declined dramatically. Divorces nowadays tend to be focused more on personal and emotional aspects. People tend to focus on how they feel and what they are missing from the marriage rather than outwardly blaming the other spouse.

What this means is that personal satisfaction has become more and more important. People are living longer and they want to be happy with their lives. People are less willing to spend decades in a marriage that is making them miserable.

People need to spend time connecting with their spouse on a daily basis. Spending less time together and a lack of affection can lead to divorce, so look for the signs that your marriage is weakening and focus on making it stronger.
