What to Discuss Before Marriage to Avoid Divorce

Marriage can be an exciting proposition. However, spending the rest of your life with someone is a huge undertaking. If you’re thinking about marriage, there’s a lot you need to consider first.

Are you really on the same page with the person you plan to marry? Do you share the same values and goals? What does your future look like?

Marriage should not be taken lightly, so make sure to take some time and think things through. There are a lot of important conversation topics you and your future spouse need to discuss. Here are some things to discuss to avoid having your marriage end in divorce.

Do You Want Kids?

This is a major topic to discuss because if one person wants kids but the other doesn’t, the marriage is not going to last. The one who doesn’t want kids might give in and feel resentful. The person who does want kids may never have them and they will feel regretful. Therefore, you both need to be on the same page.

What is Your Relationship With Money?

People have different relationships with money. Some like to spend it, while others prefer to save every penny. Many people have thousands of dollars in debt, while others don’t even use credit cards. Therefore, it’s important to understand how your future spouse handles money. After all, many marriages end due to money issues, so you’ll want a stable financial foundation before you tie the knot.

What Are Your Feelings About Sex?

The passion you are feeling now is going to die down over time. How often do you want to have sex? What type of intimacy do you expect? As embarrassing as it may be to talk about sex, it’s important to get a gauge for how you and your spouse feel about it before you get married. Otherwise, you’re bound to be disappointed.

How Do We Deal With Family?

Is your partner close with his or her parents? How will you deal with meddling family members? You have to realize that while you and your partner are starting a new family together, you still have parents, siblings, grandparents and other family members to contend with. Decide how you will spend holidays and spend time with loved ones.

What Does the Future Look Like?

What does the future look like in 10, 20 or 30 years down the road? What are your retirement plans? You and your partner should have individual goals as well as couple goals. While it’s not realistic to have every detail mapped out already, you should both have a general idea of what you want to accomplish down the road.
