What Causes Infidelity?

Those who get married expect to live a life of monogamy with their spouse. However, for many, this is easier said than done. The honeymoon period of a marriage only lasts so long. Communication is not as easy. Sex decreases. People desire that connection they once had with their spouse. Sometimes they even cheat on their spouse out of revenge.

Infidelity causes a lot of heartache. In most cases, it leads to divorce. Some people even kill their spouses over it. So why do people cheat? Here are some reasons why people decide to become unfaithful.

Falling Out of Love

Not everyone who falls in love keeps that feeling for life. Sometimes the love that you have for a person fades over time. That person who you thought was your soulmate may become boring over time. Relationships require a lot of effort, so it’s easy for someone to not put in the work and cause a marriage to become stale.

Neglect

Along the same line, a person can feel neglected in their marriage. If your spouse never talks to you or wants to be intimate with you, then you may get your needs met elsewhere. Everyone wants to feel loved and appreciated, so when they don’t, infidelity is often on their mind.

Sexual Desire

In a couple, there is often one person who wants sex more than the other. When a person is constantly rejected by their partner, it’s a huge blow. They often suffer self-esteem issues, so in order to feel better about themselves, they seek sex elsewhere.

Sudden Urge

Not all cases of infidelity are planned. A person who is stressed out may find temporary relief in a quick fling. Someone having fun on vacation may meet a gorgeous stranger and take things too far. A person who has had too much to drink may not be using their better judgment. Landmark events, such as a 40th birthday, can cause someone to feel uninhibited and engage in acts that they wouldn’t normally do.

Variety

A person with little sexual experience may suddenly decide they want a little variety in their life. They may be bored with their sex life or wishing that they had not married so young. In these situations, they may be seeking out something different to spice up their dull sex life.

Revenge

If your spouse cheated on you, then you may want to get back at him or her by engaging in infidelity yourself. This is not necessarily the best way to solve the problem, but when a person is angry, they may cheat on their spouse as a form of revenge.
