What are different types of adoptions I should explore?

Making the decision to adopt a child is a life-changing decision that is only one of many you will have to make along the way. Once you decide that you want to adopt, you will have to explore the various types of adoptions to decide which type you wish to pursue.

What are the primary ways of adopting a child?

Generally, there are two ways to adopt a child. One is through an agency and the other is independently. There is also a hybrid method that is termed identified adoptions. An agency adoption means going through a private or public agency to adopt the child. These agencies are licensed and regulated by the state. These agencies usually work with wards of the state but can also help other children as well. Independent adoptions use a direct arrangement between adoptive parents and birth parents. Identified adoptions start out as independent adoptions but then the parties seek the assistance of an agency to complete the process.

What are some considerations of adoptions?

Going through an agency for an adoption might mean that you are placed on a waiting list. This can increase the amount of time you have to wait for your new addition to the family. If you don’t want to go through that wait, you can try to an identified adoption because you would have the benefits of working with an agency without having to wait on a list for a child to adopt.

No matter what type of adoption you choose, making sure you protect your interests is a priority. Learning how to do so can help you on your journey toward adding a new member to your family.
