Violator of Maryland domestic violence laws dead, wife shot

It’s unfortunate that Maryland domestic violence laws are violated so frequently and people are mistreated by others. An Ann Arundel County domestic violence lawyer often deals with people who are in the middle of an abusive situation and are seeking a method to end the violence. The main goal is to stop the abuse and find a save haven for themselves and their children. There are legal protections for people who are facing abuse. If steps are not taken, patterns of abuse tend to grow worse as time passes.

Recently, a 28-year-old woman was hospitalized after being shot in the stomach, and her 37-year-old husband is dead after a 12-hour standoff in which the husband held his wife captive in an SUV. The couple was in the midst of a divorce that was recently filed by the wife. The relationship was rife with allegations of abuse and the husband had been previously arrested for violation of a protective order. The marriage had lasted for two years and there was alleged abuse for the entire time.

The woman’s mother had grown concerned when she hadn’t heard from her daughter, so she called the police. They located the vehicle, spurring the standoff. When the police approached the vehicle, the shootings occurred. The woman was reported in serious condition.

When there is abuse in the home, the victims are often unsure of what to do. A person who is being abused has two options: a protective order and a peace order. A protective order is for a person who seeks protection from a spouse, from someone with whom they share a child or have lived with for the previous 90 days. A peace order is for protection against a stranger, an acquaintance or a neighbor. There are three levels of these orders including interim, temporary and final. It’s even possible for a person who files one of these orders to receive financial support and child custody from the person who has been abusing them.

The circumstances surrounding this case are all too familiar. A woman who was trying to escape an abusive relationship had her life placed in danger when the man she was divorcing held her at gunpoint and shot her and himself. It’s imperative that the victim of abuse contact a Maryland domestic violence lawyer to discuss the situation and take steps to receive protection under the law before the situation spirals out of control.
