Unique risks occur for kids of adults in same-sex relationships

Same-sex couples face a host of challenges that aren’t common in opposite-sex relationships. When it comes to raising children, there is a very unique challenge for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples. Only one of the parents can be a biological parent for the child. If something happens to the biological parent, there is a chance that the other parent who has helped raise the child would become involved in a custody battle because that parent wouldn’t technically have a legal leg to stand on for custody if someone who is biologically related to the child is trying to claim custody.

We understand that you only want to protect your child and your relationship with your child. If you are in a same-sex relationship, you might opt to pursue an adoption of the child who you are raising. This could help you if something happens to your child’s other parent.

Of course, that isn’t the only type of adoption that you might choose to pursue. You might also choose to pursue the adoption of a child who is in foster care or who is being placed up for adoption by the biological parents. Even in these cases, we can help you to learn about your rights during the adoption process.

It is important for you to learn about the ins and outs of the same-sex adoption options that might apply to your situation. Not only can this help you prepare for the process that you will face, it can also help you to ensure that your children are protected in the best way possible if something should occur.
