Underlying issues are often found in prescription drug cases

Prescription drug violations are often difficult to defend against. While there are some of these violations that are defiant criminal acts that should be prosecuted, many of these violations are actually a cry for help. This would be the case if the person facing the violation was battling an addiction or felt the need to sell prescription drugs to make money. We know that there is often more to the story than just a criminal act.

It is important to address any underlying issues. While that won’t necessarily do away with criminal justice proceedings, it could help to stop future issues from occurring. If addiction is the issue, getting treatment might help. If a need for money is the issue, assistance finding a job or other programs might help.

When it comes to prescription drug violations, the first thing that we must consider about your case is where it is being prosecuted. The reason for this is that prescription drug charges can be federal or state. If the charge is federal, you are facing a tough battle. You have to know how to defend against tough prosecutors because you could be facing minimum sentences for the charges. In many cases, federal drug charges carry a minimum of five years in prison.

Even if you are facing state crimes, you can’t skimp on your defense. State crimes are also associated with time in prison, as well as fines and other penalties. In some cases, you might be able to enter into a plea agreement to help you get the help you need while avoiding having to live with very harsh penalties.
