Tips For A Long-Lasting Marriage

Marriage3

Some marriages last maybe a few years, while others last a lifetime—several decades or longer. What is their secret? Why do these marriages last so much longer than others?

Marriage is not easy. Working to get along with the same person for years upon years can be frustrating. So to make a marriage last, both parties need to put in the effort. Here are some tips for a long-lasting marriage that will stand the test of time.

Keep the Peace

Some people just want to start drama all the time and fight over stupid things. However, the trick is to avoid these types of games if you want your marriage to last. Try to keep the peace and if you do argue, fight fair. Don’t give your partner the silent treatment or argue over the same things over and over. Pick your battles carefully. Don’t ruin a good time over the small, petty stuff that won’t even matter the next day.

Keep Things Fresh

Expect change. Nobody stays the same after decades. Your partner may want new friends or hobbies. Let them. You and your spouse don’t have to do everything together. In fact, you shouldn’t. Maintaining your independence keeps the marriage fresh. You do things on your own and so does your spouse, so you always have new things to talk about.

Don’t Keep Score

Avoid getting petty over chores. Don’t keep score over who does more. You may think you do everything, but you need to sit back and think about all your spouse does for you. If you’re drowning in chores, ask your partner to take over. Use kind words. It’s easy to get mad and frustrated over these types of things, but you need to refrain from doing so.

Show Your Love

Sure, you love your spouse, but do you ever show it? If not, you need to. When a partner feels unloved and unappreciated, they’re bound to feel resentful and this can quickly ruin a marriage. Plan regular date nights, even if you have kids. Buy token gifts for your partner. It’s the little things that keep the love alive.

Keep Laughing

They say that laughter is the best medicine and it’s no surprise that a sense of humor is a must in a marriage. Try not to take things too seriously. Being able to laugh at yourself can be helpful as you go through tough situations in your life.
