Should You Save Your Marriage?

The honeymoon phase of a marriage does not last forever. All couples face troubles from time to time. Most of these issues can be quickly resolved and life resumes as normal. However, some issues are deal breakers that cause the marriage to deteriorate and quickly end.

Many people, however, feel the need to fight for their marriage. Perhaps there are children involved. Maybe they do not believe in divorce. Finances may be a factor.

While a person should do what they can to save their marriage, ultimately, it takes two people to make an effort. If you are the one doing all the work, then the marriage is not going to survive.

Divorce is not easy. It is a stressful and expensive process. It is not something that should be taken lightly. It should only be considered as a last resort.

Given your unique circumstances, should you stay or should you go? Here are some situations in which you should probably consider divorce.

Reasons to Divorce

Some problems in a marriage get better if a couple works on them. Some problems get worse. Here are some problems that eventually lead to divorce:

  • A person should never have to endure physical or emotional abuse in a marriage. This should be an absolute deal breaker for everyone.
  • A substance abuse disorder or some other sort of addiction controls a person’s life and, ultimately, the marriage.
  • Once a cheater, always a cheater.
  • Financial problems. A spouse who spends too much rarely learns to curb their habits.
  • Marriages should be built on trust. You cannot trust a spouse who rarely tells the truth.
  • Different goals in life. An example would be if one spouse wants kids and the other doesn’t. This is a major issue that could ruin a marriage.
  • Control issues. Spouses should be allowed independence in a marriage.
  • Irresponsible behavior. Spouses should act like adults, not kids.
  • Criminal behavior. You shouldn’t be married to someone willing to break the law.
  • A person should own up to their mistakes.
  • No respect. Spouses should respect each other, not bully or criticize them.
  • Unwilling to compromise. A spouse should not expect to get his or her way all the time. This is childish behavior.
  • Lack of intimacy. The spouses should be attracted to each other. While sex is not a requirement, some sort of physical intimacy should be.
