Should You Remarry?

Many marriages end in divorce. And while divorce can be devastating, many people opt to tie the knot again in hopes of finding everlasting love.

If you thought your first marriage was hard, expect your second one to be even harder. According to statistics, 50% of first marriages end in divorce. For second marriages, this number rises to 67%.

So it’s possible that if you remarry, you could end up in divorce court once again. This can be a scary thought. So before you walk down the aisle one more time, you may want to carefully think about whether or not you should get remarried. Here are some things to consider.

Are You Moving Too Fast?

People often have a hard time adjusting to the single life, so they look to get back into a relationship quickly. Don’t look for a rebound relationship. Take some time to adjust to singlehood and work on yourself. When you are ready, start dating again, but move slowly. You shouldn’t be ready to get married again a year after your divorce. Take some time to learn about your new partner.

What Are Your Reasons?

You should remarry because you want to. You’re in love and want to spend your life with someone. You should not feel like you have to get married for financial stability. You should be able to live independently before you rush into a marriage.

Consider Your Relationship With Partner’s Ex-Spouse, Children

More than likely, your partner has an ex-spouse and children. What is your relationship with them? Do they like you or at least respect you? Or are you mean to each other? You’ll want to consider this because you’ll have to interact with these people regularly. Make sure you are all on good terms before you get married.

Understand Your Partner’s Financial Situation

Once you get married, you and your spouse will have to share finances. How is your partner with money? Is there debt involved? Who will pay the bills? It’s important to gain as much knowledge as you can about your partner’s finances, since many marriages end due to money issues.

Are You Ready to Get Married?

What it all comes down to is: are you ready to get married? Are you still harboring feelings for your ex-spouse? Do you have commitment issues? Have you gotten therapy to help understand why your marriage didn’t work out the first time? If you have truly moved on from your first marriage, then you can think about getting married again when you are ready.
