Sentences handed down in armed robbery case

On May 19 in Glen Burnie, a Popeye’s restaurant was reportedly robbed by two 17-year-old boys, one 18-year-old man and one 19-year-old man. The next day, a Pizza Boli’s in Annapolis was also robbed, reportedly by the same four people. The 19-year-old recently pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel Circuit Court to two counts of use of a handgun in a crime of violence and two counts of armed robbery.

The robberies happened around an hour apart. According to police, the employees were told to lie down on the floor. The cash was taken from the cash register and an employee’s cellphone was taken.

Taking the cellphone was reportedly what led to the group’s arrest, as the employee used a mobile app to track the phone and notify police. An officer located the group’s car and tried to pull it over. Police say that the driver didn’t stop. Instead, he reportedly drove out of the city, and the handgun was tossed out of the car during the pursuit.

According to law enforcement, the driver stopped on Honering Trail, and all four occupants ran off into the woods. The police were able to find one of the 17-year-olds and the 18-year-old. They say that loose money was found in the woods and a total of $318 was found on the pair. The 19-year-old and the other 17-year-old were located later. Also located was the gun allegedly used in the robberies. All of the defendants were charged as adults, but the two 17-year-olds’ cases were sent to juvenile cases.

The 18-year-old was sentenced to 20 years on each of the armed robbery charges and 20 years on each of the handgun charges. He will only have to serve five years in prison, since 15 years on each count is suspended. The sentences will be served concurrently.

The man is also serving a year and a day for a probation violation on a 2013 theft charge. It will be served concurrently. The 19-year-old man was sentenced to the same for the handgun and armed robbery charges.

When facing such serious charges, you need a strong defense. An attorney can give you more information about your rights and creating a defense against your charges.
