New Divorce Trend: Destination Parties

You likely had a party before you got married and said “I do.” Your wedding party probably arranged a bachelor or bachelorette party to help you celebrate your last night of freedom. But what happens when the marriage doesn’t last? Do you sit at home and mope? While some people might, the new trend is to have a divorce party and celebrate your newfound freedom.

While many people travel to Las Vegas to catch a show, gamble, take in the tourist scene or maybe even get married, many are heading to Sin City to celebrate their divorce. After all, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so it’s the ultimate party town.

People celebrate their wedding, so why not celebrate the divorce if it doesn’t work out? Instead of staying home and having pity parties, the new trend is for recently divorced men and women to take their friends on multi-day excursions in Las Vegas. There, they can plan a variety of activities to have fun and recharge.

Hotels and business are looking to capitalize on this new trend. Those in the hospitality industry are creating divorce packages for these vacations, often called “girls’ trips” or “friends’ trips.” People are always looking for an excuse to travel, and a divorce party is just another milestone trip, much like a honeymoon or a bachelor party.

But make no mistake: a divorce party is not the same as a bachelor party. The adults are often older, more financially secure and, in some ways, crazier. That’s because they don’t have a spouse waiting for them at home anymore. It’s just them, and they can party as much as they want. Money is not as much as an issue. They are more willing to splurge on lavish accommodations than fit a dozen friends in one hotel room.

So what do people do at a divorce party in Las Vegas? Some gamble, but not as many as you would expect. While nearly three-quarters of Vegas visitors gamble, 67% gamble for just a couple hours a day. Many would rather catch a show or concert. Some engage in typical tourist attractions, such as touring the Grand Canyon. Strip clubs are also popular. Divorce packages are often available, which include limos and VIP seating.

While divorces can be stressful and sensitive, a trip to celebrate can be very therapeutic. Those going through such an event should allow themselves to relax and have fun with friends and family members.
