When you think of rape, you probably think of a female victim and male offender. However, this isn’t always the case. It’s possible for a teen boy to be raped by an adult woman, as seen in a recent case from Maryland.
On August 17, a 43-year-old woman was arrested by Frederick Police after receiving a tip from a doctor’s office. On July 2, the doctor’s office informed the police department that it had knowledge about a boy and a woman having a sexual relationship.
The Maryland woman was engaged in a sexual relationship with the 14-year-old boy for the past year. A warrant was issued for the woman’s arrest. She was arrested and charged with two counts each of sex offense and rape.
The woman is being held without bond at the Frederick County Adult Center. She has been ordered to have no contact with the victim.
Society often assumes that only females can be victims of rape. However, boys and men can be victims as well. While it’s not as common, it can happen and it can be emotionally devastating.
Rape among men is still seen as somewhat taboo in our society. It even has a negative connotation, especially if the perpetrator was also a male. Because of this, many victims keep the sexual assault a secret, unless they were physically injured as a result.
Male sexual assault victims may feel ashamed and even confused, especially if they experienced an erection or ejaculation during the assault. However, these are normal responses and it does not mean that the male enjoyed being raped.
Males who are victims of rape face a heavy emotional burden, as it is still hard for many to believe that men can be raped. Because of this, males who are sexually assaulted often experience the following:
Sadly, the suicide rate for male victims is also much higher than average. It is even higher than the rate for female rape victims. This is likely because male victims tend to experience a lack of masculinity after a sexual assault. Many often believe that if they are stronger or manlier, they could have fought off the offender. This leads to a lot of emotional trauma and negative thoughts.
Rape and other sex crimes are serious matters in Maryland. A person convicted of such a crime can face many years in prison as well as other penalties, such as hefty fines and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
