Maryland Pizza Shop Owner Sentenced To 20 Years For Fatal DUI Crash

The law does not take kindly to those who have a lengthy criminal record. Getting one DUI is bad enough, but when a person has two previous DUI convictions and kills someone the third time around, they are more than likely going to get punished severely.

Indeed, a Glen Burnie man is facing decades in prison due to his reckless actions. After more than a year, the man has received his sentencing after pleading guilty to a crash on February 8, 2021. The man, the owner of a pizza shop, was intoxicated when he crashed and killed a 37-year-old Army veteran from Pasadena.

In December, the 38-year-old owner of Champs Pizza pled guilty to multiple charges, including driving under the influence, negligent manslaughter, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. At the time of the crash, the man had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12—above the legal limit of 0.08. He was also driving at speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour and using the Snapchat app on his phone. While he was engaging in these actions, he rear-ended a car on Route 10 in Glen Burnie. This caused the vehicle to lose control, overturn, and hit a guardrail. On top of that, the man then fled the accident scene, leaving the victim to die.

Law enforcement officials found the man’s behavior appalling. Anne Arundel County police searched the area after the crash to locate the man. He tried to solicit people with cash to take him home. Police officers finally found the man later that night. He had blood on his clothing as well as glass on his face and beard. He told police that he had fallen and hit his head. However, DNA testing showed that he was driving the vehicle that killed the victim.

This was not the man’s first DUI. He had two previous drunk driving convictions along with other traffic offenses. He did not have the required ignition interlock device in his vehicle. The man has allegedly created the ancient as a joke and has accrued violations while in the county jail.

The man was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with 10 years suspended. The man was also ordered five years of probation. During this time, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor that can detect alcohol use.
