Maryland Music Teacher Sentenced for Possessing Millions of Child Porn Images

Parents entrust teachers with their children. They assume that they will teach their children right from wrong as well as protect them from harm. While most teachers uphold their duties to students, some do not. There are many teachers who inflict harm on children by viewing, downloading and possessing child pornography.

A music teacher in Maryland has been sentenced for child porn after law enforcement officials found more than a million sexually explicit photos of children on the man’s computer and hard drives. The man pled guilty to federal child porn possession charges back in February. On November 20, he received his sentencing: 54 months in prison, with five years of supervised release once he gets out of prison. He must also pay $144,000 to 35 victims for restitution.

The 75-year-old man once taught music to children in his Bethesda home. In March 2019, he caught the attention of Maryland State Police. Police were conducting an investigation on a file sharing network that was involved in child pornography. They detected an IP address that was requesting large blocks of suspected child porn files. The address was connected to the man’s residence.

In May 2019, police executed a search warrant at the man’s house. A search of one computer uncovered more than 400,000 child porn files. Five external hard drives were also removed from the home and they also contained pornographic images. Altogether, the search yielded more than 1,126,000 images and 6,800 videos. The man admitted to using file sharing software to download images over a period of 10 years. Project Safe Childhood, which helps prevent child exploitation and abuse, helped alert police to the case.

Child Porn on the Rise

The coronavirus pandemic has caused a lot of chaos in the world. Many businesses have shut down. Students are learning from home. Millions are without jobs, leading to a severe financial crisis.

On top of everything else, people have been forced to quarantine and stay in their homes. People are bored more than ever and to pass the time, they are using their smartphones and computers much more. This has caused many people to search the internet for things that they may have never searched for before — child porn being one of them.

Sadly, money is also a factor. Some parents create videos of themselves sexually abusing their children in order to earn income. People can make a lot of money creating these videos.
