Maryland Man Arrested for Child Porn Possession and Distribution

CrimDef5

Child porn crimes have become more prominent in the past decade. Now, it seems as though these crimes are popping up everywhere. People of all ages and from all walks of life are engaging in these crimes and police are on their tails. They are doing what they can to prosecute child porn users.

A 52-year-old man from Maryland is one of the latest child porn arrests in the state. The Hyattsville man was arrested on September 6 after he was found in possession of child porn.

The man was arrested at his home after he was investigated by the Maryland State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. In August, the agency received several tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children related to online child porn. Maryland State Police acted on these tips and found out that the child porn distribution was linked to the man’s residence.

Several agencies—Maryland State Police, the Prince George’s County Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations—executed a search warrant. They seized the man’s electronic devices and found multiple files depicting child porn. The Maryland State Police Digital Forensics Laboratory will analyze those files.

The man was arrested and is currently at the Prince George’s County Detention Center. He faces three counts of child porn possession and six counts of distribution.

Child Porn Penalties

Child porn charges come with severe penalties. Possession of child pornography is defined as possessing any visual representation of a child under 16 (such as images or videos) that is sexually explicit. This includes a child in a state of sexual excitement or engaged in sexual conduct or sadomasochistic abuse. A person convicted of this charge can face 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Distribution or production of child porn is also a crime. This involves allowing a minor to be involved in a visual representation that shows them engaging in child porn or sadomasochistic abuse. This also refers to promoting or sending these images to others. A first offense can result in 10 years in prison and/or a fine of $25,000.

In both situations, a person will have to register as a sex offender. Also, these are felony offenses, which means a person will face various challenges for the rest of their life. Their employment opportunities can be affected. Their education and housing can also be impacted. A person with a felony offense on their record will also lose out on the right to own a firearm. They also may not be able to travel outside of their country.
