Man faces manslaughter, theft and traffic violations after crash

A Maryland man suspected of being involved in a fatal car accident in which two people lost their lives has been arrested. Maryland police believe that the man was speeding when he hit a van carrying six passengers. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter as well as other traffic violations.

According to the report, police were responding to a call about gunshots being fired on Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights, and they attempted to pull a car over that was leaving the area so that they could question the driver. The 18-year-old then allegedly sped away from the officers. Police claim that the man was able to evade them momentarily, and they suspect that he turned off his headlights in an attempt to hide. However, as he approached an intersection, his vehicle slammed into a van.

Six people — including two children — were passengers in the van, and all had to be taken to an area hospital. Four of the passengers are currently said to be in stable condition; however, the 23-year-old driver and 21-year-old passenger died as a result of their injuries. The man accused of the crime supposedly attempted to hide nearby, but he was ultimately located and arrested. The vehicle he was driving was also reportedly stolen. He and his passenger were also taken to the hospital, and his friend is still hospitalized.

The Maryland man has been officially charged with vehicular manslaughter, theft, negligent manslaughter and various traffic violations. It is clear that, as the man’s criminal proceedings progress, he will be much more prepared to make decisions in his defense if he focuses on gaining knowledge of his rights under our laws to better defend against his accusations. As with any criminal case, all accused persons are innocent until, and only if, proved guilty by relevant evidence that meets a high standard of proof.
