If you are arrested for DUI over the holidays, we can help

It may seem hard to believe, but Christmas is now just over a week away. This means people will be out in droves over the coming days to get in some last minute shopping and, of course, attend festivities with family, friends and co-workers.

Anyone planning to attend these holiday-related festivities, however, will want to keep in mind that law enforcement officials across the state of Maryland will be out in full force looking for those partygoers who have had too much to drink.

These increased enforcement efforts during the holiday season perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that statistics routinely show that the end of December is one of the most dangerous in terms of alcohol-related car accidents.

Interestingly enough, state officials recently announced the launch of a new smartphone app just last week that they believe will help not only help reduce the number of these accidents over the holidays, but reduce the number of drunk driving arrests as well.

The smartphone app — available for iPhones and Android phones — is called ENDUI, and allows users to enter certain information to help determine whether they will need a sober ride home.

To illustrate, ENDUI — pronounced “End DUI” — allows a person to input such vital information as their weight, gender, type of alcohol consumed, number of drinks consumed and the timeframe within which these drinks were consumed, and receive an estimate as to whether their blood alcohol content is likely over the legal limit of .08.

In addition to the BAC estimates, the app is also equipped with games to measure response times, numbers for cab companies and a mechanism through which to report suspected drunk drivers.

It’s certainly encouraging to see the state taking these proactive measures toward drunk driving, and not relying solely on enhanced enforcement measures like saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that if you find yourself under arrest for driving under the influence this holiday season to remember that mistakes happen, and, more importantly that you do have rights and you do have options.
