Former Maryland Dentist Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charge

When we think of people who are involved in the promotion of child porn, we don’t normally think of our dentist. However, that’s the case for a Maryland man, who once worked as a family dentist.

The 28-year-old man from New Windsor has been arrested and charged with child pornography distribution and promotion. As part of a deal with the state, he pled guilty to one charge on June 15. His punishment includes one year of incarceration. He must also register as a sex offender.

The dentist was arrested in November 2019 after he was caught possessing and sharing multiple images of child porn. He allegedly accessed an online social network while at work at a dentist’s office in Parkville. He is no longer employed at the family dental practice.

Investigators found multiple child pornography files linked to the man’s social media account. The files include videos of children, including a 12-year-old girl. At first, the man claimed he was not aware of the girl’s age. However, since he was a family dentist who had worked with children and he had education about children, he later admitted that he had a good idea of the girl’s age.

The dentist received his sentence on September 23. The judge gave him the sentence that the state had requested, which was five years in prison. All but one year at the Carroll County Detention Center was suspended. Maryland sentencing guidelines recommended punishment ranging from probation to three years in prison.

Despite the nature of his criminal charges, the man is not prohibited from seeking employment in Maryland. However, while on probation, he cannot have contact with children under the age of 18. If he has relatives under the age of 18, he can only have supervised contact with them.

The man will also have to register as a Tier II sex offender, which means he could be on the list for as long as 25 years. However, the judge may reconsider at the end of the man’s supervised probation. It is also possible that the court could convert the dentist’s sentence to probation before judgment, which means there would be no criminal conviction and the man could then be removed from the Maryland Sexual Offender Registry.

The dentist gets credit for time served, as he has already spent close to 11 months on home detention. His lawyer believes he could be released from the Carroll County Detention Center soon.
