Fireworks Used As Aid In Maryland Casino Robbery

If you think about it, if you were to rob something and get a large amount of money in the process, a casino would make a lot of sense. These large, popular buildings are often home to millions of dollars. However, with so much security in these facilities, robbing a casino is no easy task.

People do try to rob casinos anyway. It happens a lot in places such as Las Vegas and it recently happened to a casino in Maryland. Thieves recently tried to rob the MGM National Harbor, located in Oxon Hill. In an unusual twist, they used fireworks beforehand to cause a distraction.

The attempted robbery occurred on the evening of February 26. A fire alarm was pulled and someone set off fireworks, although it sounded like gunshots. This caused panic throughout the casino, as confused patrons rushed toward the exits.

It is unknown how the alarm was triggered, but in the panic, there were also what sounded like fireworks. During the panic, several people stole an unknown amount of chips. It is believed to be a planned group operation involving more than one person, although police cannot confirm that it was indeed coordinated.

According to police, no injuries were reported in the robbery. There are multiple suspects, but there are no descriptions nor surveillance video, so finding out who stole the casino chips will not be an easy task. No arrests have been made yet and the incident is still under investigation.

Casino Robberies

Due to extensive security and surveillance at casinos, successful heists are not common. When they are successful, it is often due to someone stealing cash or casino chips. These thefts often involved firearms and would result in thefts of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. In these situations, security guards and other employees are often injured by the robbers.

When casino robberies are successful, it is often due to a lack of security. For example, in one successful heist, there were multiple security issues found. First, there was no CCTV, which made it difficult to find the perpetrators. Also, there was no security at the casino entrance, allowing the thieves to easily enter the building. Another issue was that, unlike most casinos, there was no emergency button behind the counter to alert the authorities.
