Dealing With Irreconcilable Differences

You can get a divorce without having any real reason. You don’t have to blame the other party. In fact, when most people get divorced, they use “irreconcilable differences” as a reason. This term is used as a catchall for any no-fault reason, but what exactly does it mean?

Irreconcilable differences occur when a married couple cannot get along with each other. The problem is so severe that they therefore cannot keep their marriage intact. The reasoning is that some problems are so pervasive that divorce is the only option. A court will grant a divorce based on irreconcilable differences if it is determined that the spouses cannot agree on basic issues in a marriage.

What comprises a marriage that has irreconcilable differences? Here are some factors to keep in mind.

Lack of Trust

This is probably one of the biggest issues in a marriage. You married your spouse because you trusted them. When you can no longer trust them, the marriage starts to erode. If your spouse has cheated on you or they constantly lie to you, it can be hard for them to regain your trust. They will need to admit to their mistakes and make the effort to change their ways. Otherwise, your marriage is in deep trouble.

Financial Problems

Many divorces stem from money problems. Some people like to spend, while others like to save. When couples can’t agree on financial goals, this can cause a lot of tension in a marriage.

While your marriage may suffer, it doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. The key is honest communication. Don’t hide things from each other. Talk about purchases together.

Built-Up Anger

When one person always has to do everything and make sacrifices in order to keep the marriage going, it often leads to resentment. Over time, this built-up anger increases and leads to a huge blowup.

To avoid this, you again need to communicate. Don’t hide your feelings. If you’re disappointed that your spouse didn’t follow through on something, let them know. But don’t pick up their slack either. It’s best to address these issues as they come up.

Personality Differences

People change over time and so do the things that drive you nuts. Your spouse’s goofy personality may have attracted you to them, but as you get older, you might find it annoying and even immature. If your spouse’s personality is now more of a turn-off than a turn-on, then it’s time for both of you to play upon your strengths. You do what you do best, and let your spouse take care of the rest.
