Corrections Officer Arrested After Raping Inmate

Being incarcerated can be a scary situation. Making the situation worse is getting raped by a corrections officer.

This is what happened in Maryland. A corrections officer from Anne Arundel County was arrested after it was discovered that he had sexual activity with an inmate on multiple occasions.

The 55-year-old man from Glen Burnie now faces multiple criminal charges, including second-degree rape, second-degree assault, and fourth-degree sex offense. He is currently in jail and being held without bond.

A female inmate at the Jennifer Road Detention Center claimed the corrections officer had sexually assaulted her as many as 50 times in recent months. She was interviewed by Anne Arundel County Police detectives before the man resigned from his position in June.

Investigators learned that the correctional officer would enter the woman’s cell, order her to remove her clothes, and then ask her to engage in sexual activity in front of a camera. In one instance, the woman had raised her shirt and the man was caught on camera caressing her. The corrections officer admitted to touching the woman’s genitals multiple times but claimed that all contact was consensual.

The man was accused of 20 sexual offenses and assaults, including five counts of second-degree rape. However, many of those charges will be dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Maryland Rape Laws

There are two degrees of rape in Maryland. Second-degree rape involves two required components. First, the perpetrator must have vaginal intercourse with the victim. Secondly, the rape must have occurred under one of the following circumstances:

  • The act occurred without the victim’s consent through force or threat of force.
  • The victim was mentally incapacitated or physically helpless at the time.
  • The victim is younger than age 14 and the perpetrator was at least four years older than the victim.

A person convicted of second-degree rape can face up to 20 years in prison.

First-degree rape is a more severe crime. It requires vaginal intercourse through force, without the victim’s consent. The perpetrator must also do one of the following:

  • Use or display a dangerous weapon or a physical object that can be used as a dangerous weapon.
  • Inflict serious injury, such as strangulation, suffocation, or disfigurement, on the victim while committing the rape.
  • Threaten the victim with serious injury or death.
  • Rape the victim during a burglary.
  • Rape the victim with assistance from another person.

A person convicted of first-degree rape can face life in prison.
