Anne Arundel cops collar alleged burglar with drugs

Anne Arundel County Police have taken a Maryland man into custody on charges stemming from his alleged burglary of a neighbor’s home and possession of drugs and paraphernalia. On July 1, police responded to a home in Severn in the 1800 block of Alderney Court to investigate a burglary that had allegedly taken place one day earlier. Police say that they arrested the man after he attempted to pass a personal check that was taken during the robbery at a Hanover Bank of America.

Police claim that the man in custody had previously broken into the same neighbor’s home. The 23-year-old man allegedly was carrying heroin and cocaine paraphernalia when he was detained. He now faces numerous charges, including theft, burglary, possession of drugs and paraphernalia, and uttering a false document.

The man in this case may wish to employ a criminal defense attorney to mount a defense in this case as he faces significant penalties if he is convicted. Penalties for the possession of drug paraphernalia vary based on the defendant’s criminal history; a conviction for possessing a controlled substance is a misdemeanor punishable by up to four years imprisonment and a fine of up to $25,000. Penalties for burglary and theft vary based on the nature and amount of the theft.

A criminal defense attorney in a case like this one would likely attempt to arrange for a plea bargain, given the evidence against the defendant. A plea bargain could potentially allow for the defendant to face reduced or consolidated charges and possibly to receive treatment for drug issues rather than an extended prison sentence.
