1 Injured In Assault Caused By Large Fight

Any time there are large groups of people, fights can happen. These fights may or may not involve guns and other weapons. When they do, multiple people can get injured quickly.

A large fight in Maryland caused one person to be injured. It is unknown if anyone was arrested in the assault.

The incident happened in the early morning hours of May 30. Close to 100 people had gathered at St. Joseph’s Recreation Center, located at 40610 Kavanagh Road in Mechanicsville. A clapper advised that there was a large group of people participating in an active fight. Multiple people were firing guns, while one was spraying mace. When police arrived, many vehicles were leaving the area.

One victim was assaulted while unconscious. Multiple people kicked the victim in the head and face. They were airlifted to a local trauma center. The number of arrests is unknown.

Emergency personnel could hear numerous gunshots in the area. There were no known injuries from the gunfire reported. There was also no property damage. The assault is under investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Assault: First vs. Second Degree

Assault is charged as first degree or second degree. You may not think there is a huge difference between the two, but there is. In fact, the differences are significant. A person can face a second-degree charge when they threaten someone or cause offensive physical contact against another person. The penalty is 10 years in prison and a fine of $5,000. A first-degree charge means causing or attempting to cause serious physical injury or assault with a firearm or weapon. The penalty is up to 25 years in prison.

First-degree assault means that someone attempted to cause substantial risk of death or they caused serious disfigurement, functional loss, or impairment of a body part or organ. This means that making a threat while having a deadly weapon in your possession can result in these charges. Making a threat without being in possession of a weapon can result in second-degree charges.

As you can see, the punishment can be severe. Being charged with assault is no minor issue. You need a strong defense to get the charges reduced or eliminated. Having aggressive legal representation on your side can be very helpful. You need someone with significant experience and skill to get you the best possible outcome.
