Traffic violations can impact your insurance premiums

When you get a traffic ticket, you might be tempted to just pay the fine and move on with life. That might not be the best course of action you could choose. Traffic violations can affect you long after the fine is paid.

When you are looking for motor vehicle insurance and when your policy is up for renewal, your driving record is checked. That driving record includes non-moving violations and moving violations, such as speeding tickets that you have received.

The type of traffic violation you have does have an impact on how your car insurance company reacts to your driving record. Non-moving violations will have less of an impact than moving violations. This is because non-moving violations, such as a broken light, are less likely to cause a traffic accident that could lead to your insurance company having to spend money on a claim.

There isn’t one universal way that traffic violations will impact your insurance premiums. Each company has its own policies that will determine the impact that the violations have on you. If you get a ticket, you can ask the insurance company how it will affect you because an increase in premiums could mean you pay for the violation long after the court’s involvement is over.

You might decide to fight against the traffic citation if you find out that it will have a significant impact on your insurance premiums or on other aspects of your life. In order to do this, you need to make sure that you understand the Maryland laws that were allegedly broken. You also need to understand your defense options.
