Teenager charged for theft after GPS unit is reported stolen

An 18-year-old man in Maryland was accused of stealing a vehicle GPS unit and pawning it on Aug. 7. The alleged burglary was reported after a woman discovered that the TomTom brand GPS unit in her vehicle was missing while she was on her way to work. According to reports, a damaged ignition in the woman's vehicle also led police to suspect that the burglar had attempted to commit auto theft.

After receiving a report about the incident, St. Mary County Sheriff's Office began an investigation. Deputies quickly learned that a GPS unit thought to be the one they were looking for had been pawned. The accused Lexington man was identified, and police went to his home.

At the man's residence, police allegedly obtained further evidence linking him to the stolen GPS. He was taken into custody and held at St. Mary's County Detention Center before being released on his own recognizance on Aug. 8. The man was charged for theft under $1,000, theft $1,000 to $10,000, property destruction, and rogue and vagabond.

In the state of Maryland, a theft of between $1,000 and $10,000 is a felony that could potentially lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000. A person facing this charge might wish to seek legal assistance while they argue for the charge to be dropped or seek a minimal prison sentence. If the accused individual is a teenager who has no prior criminal record, a judge may be more likely to give a sentence that includes probation or community service rather than prison time.
