Maryland woman's criminal charges: Did she or didn't she?

The report came in around 5 p.m. describing a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. When the Maryland troopers arrived at the scene of the accident, however, the interpretation of the events having taken place changed somewhat. In addition to having been involved in a motor vehicle accident, the driver of the vehicle now faces criminal charges -- attempted murder and assault of the pedestrian, who happens to be her husband.

According to the police, the 20-year-old woman said her husband had gotten out of the car after fighting with her. She then felt something on her leg which caused her to accidentally swerve the vehicle and hit her husband. The woman denied having hit her husband intentionally, but admitted to having been fighting with him all day.

After leaving the roadway, the vehicle came to rest on a fire hydrant after allegedly also striking the husband and a mailbox. The husband was taken to a local medical center where his injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening. The wife was arrested on charges of attempted murder and assault for having allegedly struck her husband with the vehicle intentionally.

After posting a bail bond for $20,000, the woman was released from jail. Criminal charges such as those facing the young Maryland wife can have serious and long-term consequences if she is convicted. Her defense will need to fully explore all options in order to back up her version of what happened, while the prosecution will need to competently prove -- beyond any reasonable doubt -- that the alleged events which the arrest report claims to have taken place actually occurred exactly in the manner described.
