In-home assault and robbery charges filed against Maryland youths

According to a police news release, a female caller, whose age was not given, reported that five Maryland teens in her home allegedly stole a cell phone from her at gunpoint. The three 14-year-old boys and two 17-year-old boys now face criminal charges including assault and robbery. One of the older boys is also charged with possession of marijuana.

The call was made to police at around 4:45 a.m. on the fourth Monday of July. The female caller told police that the five teens in her home forcibly took a cell phone from her. She alleges that when she refused to hand the phone over, one of the teens grabbed her by the arm and took the phone while another one of the youths pointed a gun at her.

Police located four of the youths later at another home and the fifth was picked up elsewhere. The younger teens face juvenile charges, while the older ones were charged as adults. All five teens and the female victim are residents of Salisbury.

The Maryland local police news release provides no explanation as to why the five youths were in the female victim's home or what her relationship to them is. In view of the seriousness of the assault and robbery charges and the degree to which the youths' lives would be changed if convicted, the teens' defense will need to carefully review the arrest documents and witness statements. The prosecution will also need to competently prove -- beyond any reasonable doubt -- that the alleged events claimed to have taken place in the victim's home occurred exactly as they were described.
