Georgetown star charged with seven traffic violations, DUI

Whenever someone faces charges of drinking and driving, that person's future is put on the line. This is especially true for people who are in the spotlight because this kind of criminal charge often leads to negative media attention.

Austin Freeman, a former basketball player for Georgetown, was recently arrested for DUI by Maryland State Police. The athlete was allegedly driving 71 mph in a 55-mph zone in Prince George's County. This led officers to pull him over and arrest him.

According to court records, the 22-year-old basketball star was cited for seven traffic violations, the most serious of which was a DUI. Among the other charges were:

  • Speeding
  • Failing to produce his vehicle's registration
  • Negligent driving
  • Reckless driving

Freeman graduated from Georgetown this past May. Just prior to his arrest he was working out for NBA teams with the hopes of being drafted. Unfortunately he was not drafted at the June 23rd NBA draft and his arrest took place only two days later.

He is now facing serious consequences from the charges against him. In Maryland, a first offense DUI charge carries with it a penalty of up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine and 45 day license suspension. This means that if Freeman is convicted, he may be facing jail time, which would certainly affect his basketball career.

Even if he is not sentenced to prison, a conviction for drunk driving may still affect whether an NBA team will want to pursue him. This is why it will be extremely important for Freeman to have an experienced DUI attorney fighting to protect his rights and defending him in the DUI proceedings against him.
